This painting examines the way the behavioural dynamics between individuals shift and change through the form of candid photography, specifically examining what authenticity means when translated across two cultural landscapes. Through candid photography and figurative painting, I have been able to document the fleeting, un-staged moments in between where people feel free to portray their natural selves. This painting explores the delicate nuances of human interactions. These ‘in-between’ moments reject the edited nature of the online appearances that people present to the world. This project offers an intimate glimpse into my Punjabi identity as I document my own lived experiences as a British-born Sikh. I celebrate the rich cultural customs and values instilled in me and offer a view into the ongoing diversification of Sikh identity across borders. Through this process, this painting reflects on contemporary debates around authenticity and performativity.
